Design and Construction

One of the standout features of the Catalina 36 MK II is its solid fiberglass hull, which provides excellent durability and strength. The deck is constructed using a balsa core, which provides good insulation and sound dampening properties, not to mention reduced weight for increased speed. The boat’s interior is beautifully crafted with high-quality materials and ample space for passengers.

Interior Features

Below deck, the Catalina 36 MK II offers a spacious and comfortable living area. The boat’s layout includes a large salon with U-shaped seating and a centerline table, perfect for hosting dinner parties or relaxing after a long day of sailing. The galley is equipped with a two-burner propane stove, refrigerator, and plenty of storage space for provisions.

The Catalina 36 MK II features two private staterooms, including a large aft cabin with a queen-sized berth and ample storage space. The boat’s head is equipped with a shower, sink, and electric marine toilet, making it easy to maintain hygiene and cleanliness while at sea.


The Catalina 36 Mk II is a mid-sized cruising sailboat first introduced in 1995 as an upgrade from the original Catalina 36, which was produced from 1982 to 1995. Catalina and their designs have changed very little through the years. To the benefit of the consumers and credit to Catalina – they designed a pretty great boat the first time. This particular boat is designed with comfort and functionality in mind, making it an excellent choice for sailors who enjoy long-distance cruising. With a length overall of 36’4″ and a beam of 11’11”, the Catalina 36 MK II provides ample space both on deck and below.


Sailing Performance

The Catalina 36 MK II is a pleasure to sail, thanks to its well-balanced design and modern rigging. The boat comes standard with a furling mainsail and headsail, making it easy to handle even for a single sailor. Manning the lines from the cockpit is ideal for solo sailors, or family cruising expedition (where you may not want young ones running forward to risk a man overboard situation). The Catalina 36 Mk II is known for its stable and predictable performance, making it a great choice for both novice and experienced sailors. The boat has a moderate displacement and a Fin with Spade rudder hull type, which allows it to easily navigate shallow waters, yet stay stable through coastal waves patterns. Alternate models of the Catalina 36 Mk II are available namely; shallower draft wing keel and tall mast alterations.

The Catalina 36 Mk II is equipped with a standard 35 hp diesel engine, which provides ample power and reliability. The boat has a maximum speed of 7.5 knots and a cruising speed of around 6 knots, making it a comfortable choice for longer journeys.
