All About Your Tanzer 22

Rig Specifications

These are the specifications provided by the designers, but even from the factory, these boats may not be identical. The reason for this is that the sail industry often contracts manufacturing to different sources in order to achieve economies of scale. What this means is – your Tanzer 22 may be more unique than you initially thought.

It’s important to note that boats are also frequently customized, so if you suspect that work has been done on yours, it’s best to take your own measurements. When ordering a sail, we will advise you if using the manufacturer’s specifications is appropriate, or if we require you to complete our own measurement forms.

I: 28.43 ft / 8.67 m

Design and Sailing Performance

The Tanzer 22 is a well-designed boat that features a full keel, making it stable and easy to handle. It is built using a molded fiberglass hull and deck, which gives it excellent durability and strength. With a displacement of 2,900lbs and a LOA of 22.50ft, the boat has a relatively shallow draft, making it suitable for shallow waters and smaller harbors.

The Tanzer 22 is an excellent performer under sail, with a balanced and responsive helm. The boat is designed to be easy to handle, even for sailors with limited experience. It is also a very forgiving boat, making it an excellent choice for those who are just starting to learn how to sail.

Interior Layout

The Tanzer 22 is surprisingly spacious for a boat of its size, with a roomy interior that can accommodate up to four people comfortably. It features a v-berth forward and two quarter berths aft, along with a galley and a head. The boat also has plenty of storage space, making it an excellent choice for longer trips.

History of the Tanzer 22

The Tanzer 22 was first introduced in 1967 and was designed by Johann Tanzer, a Canadian naval architect. It was an immediate success, with over 2,000 boats sold in the first five years. The boat’s popularity continued to grow, and it remains one of the most popular sailboats of its size to this day.

The history of Tanzer 22 Sailboat would not be complete without mentioning the roles of the companies that built it. In all, about 3 companies saw to the building of an approximate 2271 Tanzer 22 Sailboats. The first manufacturer/builder, Tanzer Industries Limited went out of business in 1986 and had to sell off the tooling and molds to the successor, Kisber & Company. A year later, Kisber & Company went out of business and sold off the molds and tooling of the Tanzer 22 Sailboat to the next buyer, Canadian Yacht Builders.

Sail Plan and Rigging

The Tanzer 22 has a simple and efficient sail plan that is easy to handle and provides excellent performance under sail. The boat features a masthead sloop rig, which means it has a single mast and two sails – a mainsail and a jib.

The mainsail is a full-batten design, which means it has stiff battens sewn into the sail to help maintain its shape and provide better performance. The jib is typically a 110% to 135% genoa, which provides additional sail area and helps the boat sail closer to the wind.

The rigging on the Tanzer 22 is also straightforward and easy to handle. The boat has a single set of spreaders that help support the mast and keep the sails from luffing. The shrouds and forestay are typically made of stainless steel wire, which provides excellent strength and durability.

Overview

Overall, the Tanzer 22 is an excellent sailboat that is well-suited for sailors of all levels. Its sturdy construction, excellent handling, and spacious interior make it an excellent choice for day sailing or longer trips.
