All About Your Pearson 27

Rig Specifications

These are the specifications provided by the designers, but even from the factory, these boats may not be identical. The reason for this is that the sail industry often contracts manufacturing to different sources in order to achieve economies of scale. What this means is – your Pearson 27 may be more unique than you initially thought.

It’s important to note that boats are also frequently customized, so if you suspect that work has been done on yours, it’s best to take your own measurements. When ordering a sail, we will advise you if using the manufacturer’s specifications is appropriate, or if we require you to complete our own measurement forms.

Performance

The Pearson 27 is a comfortable and easy-to-handle sailboat that is suitable for cruising along the coast and inland waterways. Its moderate displacement hull and fin keel provide good stability and maneuverability, while its sail plan offers a good balance between power and control.

History and Design

The Pearson 27 is a classic coastal cruiser that has been popular among sailors for decades. It is a small and maneuverable vessel that offers a comfortable and stable ride, making it a great choice for those looking to cruise along the coast or explore inland waterways. Designed by naval architect Bill Shaw, the Pearson 27 was first introduced in 1971 and remained in production until 1983. Its design features a moderate displacement hull and a fin keel with a spade rudder, giving it excellent maneuverability and stability.

The Pearson 27 was built with a solid fiberglass hull, making it both strong and durable. Its deck is also made of fiberglass and is supported by a balsa wood core, which adds additional strength while keeping weight to a minimum.

Sail Plan

The Pearson 27’s sail plan includes a masthead sloop rig with a roller furling genoa. The mainsail is typically designed to be a standard, full-batten mainsail, which provides excellent performance and allows for precise sail trimming. The sail plan’s design is optimized for upwind sailing, with a relatively high aspect ratio that generates a lot of lift while minimizing drag. The mainsail is supported by a sturdy, single-spreader aluminum mast, which provides excellent support and stability.

While the default sailplan is still a good choice for many Pearson 27 owners, your boat may have been modified, or the location you plan on sailing in may mean the design and options need to change. It’s best to talk to a sail consultant about your upcoming sailing plans so we can tailor a design and quote for your specific needs.
