At Precision Sails, our primary goal is to design sails to fit your Lagoon 42 like a glove. With that said, we can do an even better job of helping you make informed decisions if we have an understanding of what makes your Lagoon 42 unique. We have done our research and gathered information that will not only help us, but help you learn more about your boat. This information includes: features, primary uses, measurements, rig specifications, and the history of the Lagoon 42.

Balancing Comfort and Performance

Rig Specifications

These are the specifications provided by the designers, but even from the factory, these boats may not be identical. The reason for this is that the sail industry often contracts manufacturing to different sources in order to achieve economies of scale. What this means is – your Lagoon 42 may be more unique than you initially thought.

It’s important to note that boats are also frequently customized, so if you suspect that work has been done on yours, it’s best to take your own measurements. When ordering a sail, we will advise you if using the manufacturer’s specifications is appropriate, or if we require you to complete our own measurement forms.

While the Lagoon 42 was never intended to be a sailboat built for racing, she performs well given its length and weight being able to reach speeds up to 7 knots in just a gentle breeze. The 42 benefits from a large genoa and it’s a good idea to have some light wind and downwind sails onboard. Where the Lagoon 42 really shines is stability and comfort, with everything being conveniently located, it’s completely feasible to sail this catamaran while solo. Another strong point of the Lagoon 42 is its ability to have enough space for passengers and cargo without being too large to handle.

Between the comfortability, performance, and brand demand, the Lagoon 42 is a fantastic choice for a catamaran. Utilizing the open-concept layout to connect the saloon and cockpit, the 42 is very inviting and easy to navigate. Along with the open design, the Lagoon 42 is very stable and contains a handful of luxurious features making it a wonderful choice for living aboard or sailing with a family comfortably.

The Lagoon 42 is a French built catamaran that was introduced in 1990 by the naval architectural firm, Van Peteghem and Lauriot-Prevost. Lagoon designed the 42 to be very stable and easy to sail when you are with your spouse or family by tweaking some of the design elements that were featured in the previous models Lagoon had success with. Being a fourth generation Lagoon, the sailboat has a curvier design and the iconic vertical windows. The Lagoon 42 is still being produced but received a design overhaul in 2016 and is now commonly known as the Lagoon 42-2.

Sail Plan

When comparing the Lagoon 42 to its predecessors, it is noticeably more stable with less pitching to occur. This is due to the design changes that were implemented by positioning the mast 53% aft, centralizing the weight of the mast. The introduction of the Lagoon 42-2 in 2016 improved the sail plan even more by enhancing the sail area to displacement ratio to further optimize the power to stability ratio.
