Performance
While the Lagoon 42 was never intended to be a sailboat built for racing, she performs well given its length and weight being able to reach speeds up to 7 knots in just a gentle breeze. The 42 benefits from a large genoa and it’s a good idea to have some light wind and downwind sails onboard. Where the Lagoon 42 really shines is stability and comfort, with everything being conveniently located, it’s completely feasible to sail this catamaran while solo. Another strong point of the Lagoon 42 is its ability to have enough space for passengers and cargo without being too large to handle.
Overview

History
The Lagoon 42 is a French built catamaran that was introduced in 1990 by the naval architectural firm, Van Peteghem and Lauriot-Prevost. Lagoon designed the 42 to be very stable and easy to sail when you are with your spouse or family by tweaking some of the design elements that were featured in the previous models Lagoon had success with. Being a fourth generation Lagoon, the sailboat has a curvier design and the iconic vertical windows. The Lagoon 42 is still being produced but received a design overhaul in 2016 and is now commonly known as the Lagoon 42-2.
Sail Plan
When comparing the Lagoon 42 to its predecessors, it is noticeably more stable with less pitching to occur. This is due to the design changes that were implemented by positioning the mast 53% aft, centralizing the weight of the mast. The introduction of the Lagoon 42-2 in 2016 improved the sail plan even more by enhancing the sail area to displacement ratio to further optimize the power to stability ratio.
